Travel Light and Know the Rules

Traveling has become more complicated over the past few years. Airlines have become more aware of how much luggage customers are carrying, plus the total weight of these bags. If you are going on a trip, where you might buy some souvenirs, or like me get a bunch of free shampoo bottles etc, make sure you allow for additional weight in your bag. You can bring an empty luggage piece for these items as well. Most domestic airlines allow no more than 50 lbs per bag. Traveling internationally brings more issues. Your weight/baggage allowance might be one rate in the US, and another rate internationally. For example you might connect to an international airline but initially take a US based carrier to the airport connecting tht flight. Also from the US to various countries might have one weight allowance, but inter flights through that country, or to other countries might have a lesser amount. Try to fly as light as possible. I have also heard of people doing what is called a throw and go. they bring old clothes that they want to dispose of and throughout the trip they toss them out, especially on a trip to the Orient where they can buy custom clothes at very low prices.

Be warned if you come to Europe many flights around Europe have an allowance as low as 15kg, and some you even have to pay extra for that! Every airline now seems to have different policy, so I have decided to create a page with links to the baggage rules for over 40 different European airlines. You may find it useful next time you travel. It is here: http://www.allcheapflights.co.uk/Travel-Guides/6/Airline-Luggage-Allowance

Paul-Great comments. Europe is definitely a challenge with low cost airlines like Ryanair, Easyjet etc. They offer airfares for almost nothing, but you have to travel with almost nothing. They make their money on the baggage fees.
